Grandmother drinks weedkiller in court to dodge jail


Australia - A 64-year-old grandmother sentenced to a year in jail for drink-driving while on her L-plates, tried to take her own life in court yesterday by drinking a bottle of weedkiller. Beryl Dale Aspin begged magistrate Darryl Pearce for leniency, saying she had only driven because her husband desperately needed medication. But after reviewing her record, which included two previous stints in jail for drink-driving, Mr Pearce told her: "You're a risk to the community.
